SKYCIG Electronic Cigarette Motor Star Tom Ingram Reveals Benefit of Sponsors’ Support as He Reflects on His 2012 Performance

London, UK (PRWEB UK) 5 November 2012

The High Wycombe-based speed demon tallied six victories, 17 podiums, four pole positions and six fastest laps en route to third spot in the Ginetta GT Supercup standings in 2012, and he was a contender for the crown right the way down to the season finale.

There were several standout highlights, most notably the six triumphs registered by the 19-year-old British Racing Drivers Club Rising Star, MSA Academy member and KENNETT brand ambassador. The first of them came under sustained pressure at Donington Park, kick-starting his bid for the laurels, whilst there was another at Croft and peerless double-tops at Oulton Park in front of new sponsor SKYCIG and Rockingham. He rounded out the season with a rostrum finish in the torrential rain at Brands Hatch.

Its been a mixed year, with a number of highs-and-lows, he mused. We had four DNFs that cost us dear, and theres a part of me that cant help but think, what if..? We lost 35 points at Snetterton, for example, when my engine blew up as I had a 1.5-second lead.

On the positive side, though, we got quicker and quicker as the year progressed, and as we grew in confidence as a team, we consistently managed to extract more pace from the car; that was in large part thanks to the sterling efforts of all the boys at JHR Developments, who I truly cant thank enough.

I also need to thank SKYCIG and Hansford Sensors for their incredible support. I regard Chris Hansford more as a friend now than anything else; he has a huge passion for motorsport, and enjoys nothing better than attending race meetings and really getting stuck in.

Going back to Oulton Park, Ingrams dominant double victory could not in hindsight have come at a better time, as it was achieved just as energy drinks company KX was scouting out emerging talent for its new and exciting KX Akademy. With the spotlight shining down bright, the former Ginetta G50 Champion, Ginetta Junior Champion and British Karting Champion responded magnificently and he was duly selected as one of only two drivers to be inducted onto the prestigious programme.

In every area, he affirms, the association has been invaluable, from no longer needing to fret over whether he can afford to make the next meeting to having the opportunity to tap into the expertise of the schemes mentor, two-time British Touring Car Champion Jason Plato.

Having KXs support has been a tremendous boost, Ingram acknowledges, and I owe everybody there a massive thank you for believing in me. Financially, weve never been 100 per cent sure we would be able to finish the season before, so it was a huge weight off our minds in that respect. To not have to constantly worry about funding for the first time and being liberated to concentrate solely on the racing has been amazing it felt like a reward for all the hard work weve put in over the years.

Ive been able to take more chances and drive the way I want to drive and with a decent budget behind us at last, I think we showed what we can do. I really hope we can continue the partnership next year; Ive benefitted so much from being a member of the KX Akademy, but theres still so much more I can learn.

The training sessions on dealing with the media, sponsorship and finance and how best to market yourself have all been extremely valuable there wasnt a single one in which I didnt acquire something useful and having Jason as a mentor is something money cant buy. He has been there before and has the T-shirt to prove it, and theres no end of knowledge and advice that Ive been able to glean from his experience.

It has been a pleasure to work with Tom this year, adds Plato, the respect palpably mutual. He is clearly a very gifted young racing driver who appears to have a bright future within the sport I just hope he doesnt become too good, too quickly, or else hell have me out of a job!

In all seriousness, though, hes a very hard-working, intelligent and pleasant lad who listens and takes everything in, and his success over the past three seasons speaks for itself. I actually see quite a bit of myself in Tom from when I was his age, and wherever he races next year, I have no doubt he will acquit himself admirably.

SKYCIG Motor Star Tom Ingram Takes Title Battle Down To The Wire For Final Race

London, UK (PRWEB UK) 9 October 2012

SKYCIG electronic cigarette star Ingram travelled to Silverstone the celebrated Home of British Motor Racing buoyed by a magnificent victory double in the ITV4 live-televised, British Touring Car Championship-supporting Ginetta GT Supercup at Rockingham, seeing him close to just 42 points adrift of season-long leader Tom Sharp following a number of earlier misfortunes.

Whats more, the talented young High Wycombe-based speed demon had consummately wiped the floor with the opposition the last time he had competed at Silverstone en route to the Ginetta Junior Championship laurels in 2010 but despite topping the timesheets in practice in the wet in his JHR Developments-run Ginetta G55, once the water evaporated, so too did his advantage.

Going into the weekend, we knew we needed to build upon our Rockingham success and continue to take as many points out of Sharp as we could, Ingram affirmed. Unfortunately, right from the outset, we didnt have the pace we normally do. It was an odd one; we never seemed able to find that last little bit with the set-up, which meant we were lacking the final tenth of a second a margin that can make all the difference.

Its not like other circuits where if you lose time in one part of the lap, you can make it up elsewhere around Silverstones short, high-speed National layout, if you havent got the car fully underneath you and youre slow in one section, youll be slow full-stop.

In qualifying, the track was very greasy to begin with and changed pretty rapidly, which meant it came down to who could get a lap in at precisely the right moment. In those conditions, its not necessarily about who is quickest, but rather about who is willing to risk their car the most just one mistake or hitting a small patch of water can be enough to send you into the barriers. The most important thing was that I wound up ahead of Carl Breeze and Sharp, my two title rivals but the fact that we were respectively only fourth, sixth and seventh was evidence that none of us was prepared to take too many chances considering what is at stake. A safe and solid effort in the circumstances, the 19-year-old SKYCIG driver, British Racing Drivers Club (BRDC) Rising Star and MSA Academy member was a mere two tenths of a second shy of pole position, but sadly, the difficulties he had grappled against during practice in the dry returned with a vengeance come the races.

I got a good start to leapfrog Colin White, he recollected of the opening encounter, but Breeze got away even better and edged past me into the first corner, which negated my gain. I then had Sharp in my mirrors for the whole race; he was strong at the parts of the circuit that lead into the two main overtaking zones the very same areas where I was struggling the most! I honestly have no idea how I managed to hold him at bay.

I caught Jake Hill in third towards the end, but he was defending just like me and putting his car in all the right places so there was no way past; it was obviously a shame to miss out on the podium but with Sharp right behind me, I knew I couldnt afford to make any risky moves as it was vital I finished ahead of him to reduce his points lead.

I got another good start in race two, but despite our attempts to dial out the understeer in the car, we were still struggling for grip and I lost a position in the early stages. It got better later on and our pace improved I overtook Andy Richardson for fourth and was actually the quickest driver on the circuit over the final couple of laps as I closed right in on Hill in third but it was lost in the wind by then and I was subsequently given a five-second penalty for running off-track at the first corner, which dropped me to fifth. His woes compounded by his two principal adversaries taking the chequered flag first and second, Ingram left Silverstone having slipped to 52 markers adrift of the top of the points table with 109 remaining up for grabs at Brands Hatch scene of his title triumphs in the Ginetta Junior Championship in 2010 and Ginetta G50 Cup in 2011. Making it three-in-a-row in 2012 might now be something of a tall order, but the KENNETT brand ambassador is resolutely determined to give it his very best shot.

It was a frustrating weekend, with the sole saving grace being that there were only two races rather than three, but this isnt over yet and well come out fighting at Brands, he asserted. We will bounce back. Its going to be tough whichever way you look at it, but weve just got to go there targeting three wins and then at the end of the day, well see if thats enough.
